Tax time and your private health insurance statement

We’ve prepared the following to help you prepare your tax return in 2024.

How to get your tax statement for the 2023/2024 financial year

Health Partners will send your private health insurance statement (also known as tax statement) directly to the ATO. If you lodge your tax return online using myTax or lodge using a registered tax agent, your health insurance details will be pre-filled, so you won’t need a tax statement at all.

If you lodge a paper tax return, you will need your tax statement.

Your tax statement will be available from 5 July 2024.

I’m a policyholder > Log in to the Health Partners portal to view or print your statement

I’m a partner/spouse > Contact us and we will email or post it to you.

What’s a tax statement?

A private health insurance statement (also known as a tax statement) is prepared by the health fund and gives you information about your private health insurance premiums and rebate, and private hospital cover.

Why do I need a tax statement?

You may need it to complete the private health insurance policy section and Medicare Levy Surcharge question on your tax return, if you lodge a paper tax return.

You probably won’t need it if you lodge your tax return online using myTax or lodge using a registered tax agent, as your health insurance details will be pre-filled by the ATO.

Who can get a tax statement?

A tax statement is prepared for you, if you are:

  1. the policyholder
  2. the spouse/partner of the policyholder
  3. the ‘responsible person’ on a dependant-only membership

And:

  • have paid a premium toward private health insurance, and/or
  • have held private hospital cover during the financial year.

When can I get my tax statement?

Tax statements can only be prepared after the financial year has ended.

If you are the policyholder, the fastest way to get a copy is to download it when you log in or register for the Health Partners portal from 5 July 2024.

If you are the partner or spouse of the policyholder, please contact us about getting your copy emailed or posted to you.

How do I get my tax statement at the Health Partners portal?

Easy – just log in or register for the Health Partners portal in the ‘Members’ section on our homepage. Once you’re logged in you’ll be able to download if from the Health Partners portal homepage.

This option is currently available to the policyholder only.

Why is my partner’s name listed on my tax statement?

Your statement will list any other adult (except dependant children) that was covered by your policy at the time the premium payments were made.

What do I do if my statement is incorrect?

We can help you if you believe your statement has incorrect information. Please contact us.

Why can’t my child get a tax statement?

Although we can’t legally prepare a tax statement for dependant children on your cover, if they earned over $90,000 in the last financial year we can provide them with a letter stating the number of days they held hospital cover with Health Partners. This can be requested by calling us on 1300 113 113 or emailing ask@healthpartners.com.au

Why does my tax statement show $0?

A zero dollar amount in the section ‘Your premiums eligible for Australian Government Rebate’ means you didn’t make a premium payment in the 2023-24 financial year. However, your statement will show the number of days you were covered for the same period.

What is an ‘adjusted’ tax statement?

We’ll send you and the ATO an adjusted tax statement if a change is made to your membership which affects any of the information required by the ATO (e.g. Your premiums eligible for Australian Government Rebate) for the previous financial year.

How can I find out more?

There’s plenty of information on the ATO website, or call the Australian Tax Office on 13 28 61 or your tax agent.
